Cross places Route

Description

Its starting point is near the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Viso, heading to Cruzeiro do Viso (a), located on the slopes of Marão. From here the landscape over the imposing Marão is privileged, where the dawn has a different color. We continue to the center of Vila de Fontes, where we find Cruzeiro de Fontes (b). Fontes is a place full of history, where the Castle of Penaguião was probably located, on Monte de S. Pedro, which is reported to have been destroyed in the mid-13th century, and which is mentioned in 1202 in the Foral that D. Sancho I. From Fontes to the place of Crestelo (Cruzeiro de Crestelo – c) the landscape transforms and we see a cradle of gold, full of terraces and land worked by man.

Continuing to Fornelos, passing through the Parish of Sever, the vineyard landscape gives way to groves made up essentially of chestnut trees, which during autumn transform this road into a living canvas. From Cruzeiro at Capela Sr dos Aflitos in Fornelos (d) to Carvalhais, passing through Cruzeiro do Barreiro (e) the distance is short (about 2km) but we find the river beach of Fornelos, which stands out for its pleasant space and clear water , and the Roman Ceramic Kiln of Fornelos. Following a narrow road, but full of stunning views over the villages of Marão, we find Carvalhais and Cruzeiro in this village (f), with their own people and traditions, where authenticity is a reality.

Up to Cumieira, the mountainous landscape gives way to one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world: the Douro. In Cumieira (Cruzeiro da Cumieira - g) we can also visit the Santa Bárbara viewpoint, meet pilgrims from Santiago or adventurers and nature lovers who travel the 80km of hiking trails in Santa Marta de Penaguião. To Santa Marta de Penaguião, we travel along the mythical Nacional 2 in a serpentine path surrounded by aromas and colors that take us to Cruzeiro da Independência (h) at the municipality's center.
