Santa Luzia Chapel And Vhils' Sculpture

Description

The Chapel of Santa Luzia, or Senhora da Aldeia Nova, has medieval origins and the current chapel dates from the 19th century. It was in this chapel that the students used to organize the festivities in honour of Santa Luzia. Next to this chapel, on one of the walls of the castle, built during the reign of King Afonso V, a sculptural intervention by the Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, was carried out in 2014. The idea of this renowned contemporary artist was to establish a parallel between the reality portrayed in the engravings during the prehistoric period and what could hypothetically be portrayed today. Thus, this engraving presents contemporary objects that express the material concerns of the present: cars, cell phones, shopping carts, etc. The artist's aim was to raise questions about the contemporary world and what defines and represents it.
