The lands of Mur\u00e7a are divided into Hot Land, Cold Land and Mountain Land. This enormous diversity gives the municipality unique and different landscapes, between the Douro and the mountains. The history of Mur\u00e7a dates back to the first prehistoric settlements. The Roman presence in the municipality left very visible marks, such as the Roman bridge and road. Mur\u00e7a received its charter in 1224, promulgated by King Sancho I, and the Hospitaller order was established in the Middle Ages. During the reign of King Manuel I, the Mur\u00e7a pillory was erected. Also in the 16th century, Sim\u00e3o Guedes, the ninth lord of Mur\u00e7a, ordered the construction of a hostel for pilgrims, which would become the Monastery of the Benedictine Nuns. The following century saw the construction of the Chapel of Mercy, one of the region’s most beautiful monuments. Mur\u00e7a is also the birthplace of the soldier Her\u00f3i Milh\u00f5es, a figure from the First World War.<\/p>

The lands of Mur\u00e7a are extremely diverse, with distinct landscapes between the Douro and the mountains. It is a territory of clear, wild rivers, mountains and deep valleys where nature remains vigorous.<\/p>

Tuck in. Here the table is rich and bountiful. Among all the treats, the conventual sweets are not to be missed; taste the well-known queijadas and toucinho-do-c\u00e9u. There are also some of the best olive oils and wines in this, the oldest demarcated region in the world.<\/p>
