Description
At a time when the country's economic development also depended on the way in which the most remote localities were integrated into the network of connections that was being woven throughout the territory, the railway, as in other European countries at the time, played an absolutely key role. It was in this context that the Peso da Régua railway station and depot were built in the last quarter of the 19th century. Officially inaugurated with the arrival of the first train on July 14, 1879, the station quickly occupied a central place in the daily lives of the people of this region through the connection it established between the provinces of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, contributing greatly to the increase in the movement not only of people, but also of the products grown on its land, with special emphasis on wine. Despite the importance of the whole architectural complex, one of its most important formal features is the curved shape of the pier. Just like the warehouse itself, two hundred meters long and sixty meters wide, made of wood in a single volume. Today this building houses restaurants and wine and snack stores that give the whole area an unprecedented tourist dynamic.
