Description
The house, whose construction is thought to date back to the 15th century, is said to have been the birthplace of Diogo Cão, the famous navigator sent by King João II on voyages of discovery to the west coast of Africa, who reached the mouth of the Zaire River in the second half of the 15th century.
From his experience of voyages, Diogo Cão learned that, in order to reach South Africa, it was advisable to sail offshore, as Vasco da Gama later did.
