Description
The "Soldado Milhões" House Museum, which pays homage to the soldier and wants to make him known as a hero of the First World War, was inaugurated on April 10, 2023, by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in Valongo de Milhais, in the municipality of Murça.
Milhais, who came to be known as Milhões and gave his village its name, was a private who fought in the First World War and gained fame when he fought alone against the Germans to help the Allied forces withdraw during the Battle of La Lys. April 9 marks the 105th anniversary of this battle, which took place in Flanders. His house in the village of Valongo de Milhais has been restored to become an interpretive center where you can learn about its history, life in the town at the time and moments during the Great War.
Due to its state of disrepair, the house was demolished and rebuilt, preserving the original exterior features. Inside, there is an open space with images and multimedia elements that will take visitors on a journey back to the time when the private lived. There will be photographs and some objects on display, some original and others replicas.
The house was donated by the family of Aníbal Augusto Milhais, who had been calling for its restoration for many years.
