Description
Human occupation of the site of the present-day Numão Castle dates back to prehistoric times.
The first reference to this castle, now classified as a National Monument, dates back to 960, when Numão was included in the list of fortresses donated by King Flâmula to the Monastery of Guimarães.
It is visually dominant and has a vast walled perimeter, probably built in the Lower Middle Ages. The wall had four gates and fifteen towers, of which six remain. Inside the wall you can see traces of buildings, the Romanesque church of St. Mary and a cistern. Outside is the pre-Romanesque chapel of St. Peter and a necropolis with 10 anthropomorphic graves.
