Description
It was the former church of the convent of the same name, which became the Cathedral of Vila Real in 1924. It is a 15th-century church with three naves, in the Romanesque style, albeit late, with Gothic influences, as can be seen in the ogival arches of its interior and its great verticality. The stained glass windows are the work of João Vieira, dedicated to the Gospel according to St. John. The bell tower was erected in 1742 and the chancel was remodeled in 1753. The church suffered a major fire in 1837 and was rebuilt in the following decade.
