Desterro Church

Description

The Desterro Chapel was founded in 1640 by Friar Luís Álvares de Távora, bailio of Leça. The rectangular building is arranged longitudinally, rising on the site of a small chapel, presenting a transitional model between Mannerist lines and the exuberant Baroque. In the center is a portal flanked by fluted columns and surmounted by an interrupted pediment. A window opens onto it, and the whole is topped by a niche crowned by a pinnacle. The interior, with a single nave, is covered by a coffered ceiling made of polychrome wood carvings on which hagiological images have been painted, and the walls are lined with ashlars of tiles. Two collateral altars were built in gilded woodcarving, the carving of which extends through the triumphal arch. In the chancel, a gilded carved altar with a tribune was placed in the center and the ceiling is covered with painted wooden coffered ceilings. On the walls there are traces of large mural painting panels, partially covered with plaster.
