Moimenta Da Beira Parish Church

Description

The Mother Church of Moimenta has undergone some changes. At the moment, it is difficult to reconstruct an urban layout of the church to exemplify what it would have looked like 150 years ago. After it was built, the church, where it stands today, underwent alterations, namely the high altar and the tribune, which were rebuilt by an artist and specialist from Braga who intervened with a reliable reconstruction. Later, in the 20th century, in 1932, the tower was built, incorporating the bells of the Convent of S. Francisco (parish of Vila da Rua). The patron saint of Moimenta da Beira is St. John the Baptist (St. John was an individual who lived on the banks of the Jordan River and looked like a sheep), who was once altered. The people argued that the image wasn't aesthetic, so they ordered the image's head to be replaced, a job that was carried out in Braga. The cemetery in the churchyard was built in 1859 and the iron gate was erected the following year. The current cemetery was inaugurated in 1938.
