Tabuaço Mother Church

Description

Largo 5 de Outubro, a typical street that forms part of Tabuaço's historic center, is the churchyard in front of Tabuaço's Mother Church. In the center stands a small cross, perhaps on the site of the old pillory that has disappeared. The Mother Church of Tabuaço - dedicated to Nossa Sra. da Conceição - was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, but its Romanesque origins can still be seen in the chancel. The double bell tower, leaning to the left, gives it a curious and different character. Inside, it has a very rich high altar with a baroque altarpiece, or the coffered ceiling with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The carved triumphal arch separates the chancel from the nave, at the top of which are two altars.
