Description
The Miradouro de S. Pedro em Fontes is located at the top of a ridge, at an altitude of 657 meters, in a privileged spot from where we can capture some of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Douro region.
It is 360 degrees wide, allowing the observer to contemplate (without any obstacle in front of them) pictures of impressive beauty that Nature (and man) has drawn as far as the distant ridges, as far as the eye can see. The building is all cemented, with the baseboard painted black and the rest of the paintwork white. On the same site is the chapel of St. Peter. Inside, the 17th century polychrome wooden image of St. Peter stands out.
The chapel and belvedere are built on the summit of an agricultural hill, set in a churchyard bordered by a schist wall. It has been identified as an ancient Roman settlement where an "ara" dedicated to the oriental goddess "auge" was found. There have been studies published by archaeologists. For example: CORTEZ, Fernando Russel, A ara Greco-romana do Castro de Fontes -"Separata dos Anais do Instituto do Vinho do Porto", 1948.
