What to visit Patrimony

Benedictine Nuns Monastery

Description

The building that currently houses the technical services of Murça Town Hall was once built for a very different purpose. - The lords of Murça had it built to serve as a burial place for their families, and also as a support building for religious services, but in practice it was of little use, and a few years later it was transformed into a convent that would serve as a hostel for travelers and pilgrims passing through, and would also aim to help the poorest and sickest in need. It would then come to be seen as a hospital, a home for the people and a school for the municipality, as it also served meals to the poor, welcomed ladies and educated girls. This is where a great gastronomic heritage was born: the well-known convent sweets, such as Queijadas de Murça and Toucinho-do-Céu de Murça, handmade delicacies created by D. Serafina Alves and served in the monastery itself. - Today, Maria José (Zézinha) continues to keep the tradition alive, delighting those who pass by.
