Description
The Sacred Art Museum is housed in the Misericórdia Church and adjoining building in Torre de Moncorvo. It is a 16th-century building of great historical, architectural and artistic value. The façade features a portal with a full arch flanked by two medallions depicting St. Peter and St. Paul. At the top is a niche with an image of Our Lady of Amparo. Inside, the church boasts one of the most beautiful pulpits of the Portuguese Renaissance, carved from a block of granite in the shape of an octagonal chalice. Of particular note is the gilded altar in the National Baroque style, dating from the late 17th century. The annex building is an architectural complex that has been used since the 16th century as the Misericórdia house, with one of the spaces serving as a women's jail at a later date. The latter architectural complex maintains an articulated relationship with the church, as there are points of connection (and passage) between the two, allowing for a complete and enriching tour. The museum has a reception area for information and sales (postcards, catalogs, books and other items), as well as an area for reservations or deposits.
The museum space is divided into the following themed rooms: Church, Holy Week Room, Tribune, Sanctity Room and Eucharist Room.
