Pillory of Carrazeda de Ansiães

Description

The pillory of Carrazeda de Ansiães was built in the mid-18th century when the county seat was transferred from the walled town of Ansiães to Carrazeda de Ansiães. It is a granite ashlar structure that rests on a four-stepped socle. The column has an octagonal shaft with smooth sides and the capital features the coat-of-arms of King João V. Next to the pillory is a fountain locally known as Fonte das Sereias. This is a type of fountain with a tank, with a central shaft made up of four mermaids arranged vertically, like caryatids, and a circular bowl with mascarons.
