Description
It is located next to the Cloister of the Franciscan Convent of Varatojo, which is now the Town Hall. The old church of Santa Cristina was destroyed by General Loison's troops during the Second French Invasion in 1809, leaving only the tower that can be seen from the Passeio Alto, in Rua do Balcão. As soon as the Franciscan friars left the convent on May 28, 1834, the parishioners of Santa Cristina took over the church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, attached to the convent, and converted it into the new parish church, which was renamed Igreja de Santa Cristina.
