São João Batista Church

Description

It's a church with some particularities that can't be found anywhere else in the municipality. It is adorned with an elegant belfry with a double bell tower, gilded carvings on the high altar in Baroque style, and the tabernacle, which is perhaps the richest piece of interior decoration. Coura is a very old village. Prehistoric remains and a road dating back to Roman times, with some sections on the way to Arícera, prove this. The poor sandy soil and steep slopes have meant that agriculture has been practiced over the years in small "calços" where potatoes, apples and chestnuts are grown. In the past, cereals such as wheat, rye and barley were grown and, in addition to agriculture, sheep and goats were also raised. In its streets and houses, the village still retains much of the architecture of a medieval settlement that easily transports visitors back in time.
