Description
It is one of the most beautiful Miradouros in the entire Douro region, the S. Leonardo viewpoint, where Miguel Torga "dived" into the river and immersed himself in the magnanimous landscape of this "sublimated Douro", which he called "excess of nature" in one of his "Diaries". An excerpt from the work of one of the greatest Portuguese writers of the 20th century, in which the Douro is a constant presence, is inscribed on a stone. Legends and stories are told about this place, which add to the charm of this spot, one of the most beautiful places in the municipality of Regu, a must-see for anyone visiting the Douro. Monte de S. Leonardo is located to the east of the village of Galafura, at an altitude of 566 meters. This was the site of a Roman fort, of which Governor Galafre was the etymology of the current name of the parish of Galafura. From this viewpoint, as well as the view over the Douro, you can see the regions of Armamar, Sabrosa, Tabuaço, Fontelo and Valença do Douro, among many other places that frame the landscape. On Monte de S. Leonardo, made of flint and quartz, there are several Roman wells, some very deep, as a result of mineral research and extraction.
