Silk and Territory Museum

Description

The Silk and Territory Museum is located in Largo do Outeiro, in the heart of the historic center, in the parish of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. It was inaugurated on August 18, 2015 and houses the entire ethnographic, archaeological and geological collection of the former Museum of Territory and Memory, then housed in the old Casa da Cadeia. In addition to the collection inherited from the old museum, there is a recent collection associated with silk, the iconic image of the current Museum of Silk and Territory and of the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. Freixo de Espada à Cinta is the only region on the Iberian Peninsula where silk is still worked 100% by hand, using traditional, centuries-old wooden tools. Silk culture reached its peak at the end of the 18th century and fell into oblivion until the opening of this museum space, which aims to pay tribute to and publicize the history and great importance of silk in the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta. In the Silk and Territory Museum, in addition to the collection on display and the multimedia resources that explain the entire silk process (from planting the mulberry trees to the final product), the live, real-time work of the artisans who work here, exhibit and sell the pieces they make, sharing centuries-old knowledge, passed down between generations, with all those who visit this space.
