Description
The Biological Park is located about 7 km from Lamego, in a mountainous area, Serra das Meadas, at an average altitude of 1000 m, occupying an area of 50 hectares, which in the past served as a nursery for the Directorate-General for Forestry.
The Biological Park is a center for environmental education and the preservation of nature and its biodiversity, set up by Lamego Town Council on waste land provided by the Lamego and Avões Parish Councils under a protocol. This project was initially the result of a partnership between the Association for the Development of the Douro Valley and Lamego City Council and was supported by the LEADER II community program, and was inaugurated on June 5, 2002.
It was in 2011 that the Biological Park achieved greater prominence, as a result of renovations to the main entrance and the construction of the auditorium, the redesign and signposting of the visiting route, and the construction of new wildlife parks, which allowed the park to house animals in better conditions and increase its collection.
As a result of the work carried out, the park has grown in recent years and is popular with visitors from all over the north of Portugal.
