Description
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade is located in the parish of Sanfins do Douro. With five chapels, built in the second half of the 19th century, it once served as the site of a Lusitanian fort, of which there are still some traces, including two funerary stelae with inscriptions. With the arrival of the Romans, we were also left with clear testimonies, such as hundreds of coins from different periods.
Nowadays, the Sanctuary is an important tourist attraction in terms of religious and leisure tourism, since the pleasant surrounding area with a picnic area and a superb view allow for a longer visit. In the main chapel we find the beautiful and imposing image of Nossa Senhora Da Mercy, holding Christ on her lap, which is greatly venerated, especially during the pilgrimage season.
