Description
In November, the village of Maçores, in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo, holds its traditional St. Martin's festival. In addition to a religious component, with a mass and procession in honor of the village's patron saint, S. Martinho, these celebrations also have a profane and pagan component, which begins with a dawn and the arrival of the gaiteiros. They follow in a parade accompanied by the wine cauldron, which is carried by two men on a stick. As they pass, they collect the wine from the farmers and place it in the cauldron so that it can later be drunk on their knees by the local population and visitors. Part of the tradition is also a magusto, held in Largo das Eiras, where chestnuts are roasted in rye straw and everyone is invited to eat. The rest are taken in procession to be distributed among the village population to the sound of bagpipes and the accompaniment of the traditional caldeiro do vinho.
